How to Find a Financial Advisor You Can Trust

Trust in a financial advisor is built on three pillars: transparency, competence, and aligned incentives.

Transparency means your advisor clearly explains how they are compensated, what services they provide, and any potential conflicts of interest before you engage. Competence means they have the credentials, experience, and specialized knowledge relevant to your financial situation. Aligned incentives means their business model does not reward them for steering you toward products or strategies that benefit them at your expense. Practically speaking, finding a trustworthy advisor involves verifying their credentials through official registries, reading client reviews and testimonials, asking for and checking references, reviewing their Form ADV disclosure document which all registered investment advisors are required to file, and having an initial consultation where you assess whether their communication style and planning philosophy align with yours. Red flags include advisors who earn commissions on products they recommend, those who are vague about fees, and those who promise specific investment returns.
